This January was a bit of a rough transition after being away in Poland in December, and then eating, drinking and being merry over the holidays. This month I worked on a web 2.0 presentation for public health nurses in the Halifax area. I had a really interesting time putting the presentation together, and learning about the scope and ability of web 2.0 tools to make change. For the next month I’m looking forward to having our Atlantic livechat (woohoo!), launching a new contest, and hosting some more TIG presentations. I’ve been struggling a little it with introducing TIG in the schools, as the site is blocked on school computers, and it’s difficult to explain with the kids not being able to interact with the site. But a couple principals have put in requests to have the site unblocked, so hopefully they will be successful!!

Well, it’s been an interesting month, to say the least. It flew by so fast that I’m worried that I am (gasp) getting old. Despite a few stumbling blocks, I feel really good about progress this past month. Firstly, I had a really productive meeting with the Halifax contact for YouthScape, and starting in January I am going to be helping out with the program as a mentor for their promotions team, in order to document all the great things that their youth are doing. I’m really excited about this, as I’m very interested in alternative media and presenting information in accessible and relateable way for youth across all education levels. This will also be a great opportunity to encourage youth to use the tools available on the TIG website.

We have also launched a climate change contest, another issue that is really important to me. Check it out in the global gallery! I’ve done quite a bit of public education for climate change stuff, and I think that oftentimes people perceive it to be too dry and sciencey. I think this contest is a great way for youth to learn about the issue, get creative, and use that creativity to make a difference.

Next month I’m going to be in Poland for the UN Climate Change contest, so I’m really hoping to engage Nova Scotian TIG members on the issues while away, and also provide support for the international day of action. I’m also hoping to get in touch with teachers to get workshops firmed up for the New Year.

I think a big challenge for me (which I’m sure is the same for a lot of you) is Halifax’s small population. I started this month really concerned about the limited number of organizations and resources to tap into here in Halifax. Boy was I wrong. The more I’ve networked, the more I’ve found out about really cool organizations doing really great things that I’d never heard of. It got me thinking: I’ve lived in Halifax all my life and I had no idea these resources existed. How many other people are there who could really benefit from these programs if they just knew they were out there? This has made me determined to connect with these organizations and spread the word about the opportunities that are available for Nova Scotian youth right here in the province,
 All the best from one coast to the other!

Hi all:

Hope everybody made it home ok from the mean streets of the big city :)

I also had an interesting an inspiring weekend in Toronto. Although there was a lot to digest, the fact that there was so much information to take home and reflect on is an indication of the endless opportunities that exist through TiG. It’s awesome to know that we can be a link to an amazing array of information and opportunities for youth and other organizations.

It was also really nice to be able to connect with such a cool group of individuals who are all doing such great things in their own communities. Everyone has achieved so much on their own, the possibilities are endless if we share our skills and experience. It’s going to be great to hear about everyone’s successes (and failures) in their own communities in order to learn and strengthen ties amongst youth, across the country and beyond. Let the fun begin! À bientôt!
